Flavigny-sur-Ozerain is perhaps the Sleeping Beauty of the little mediaeval towns of Burgundy.

Surrounded by a wall and scented by the sweet fragrances which emanate from the small factory producing the famous Flavigny aniseed balls, the town seems to step straight out of the Middle Ages. Its narrow, winding streets are sometimes bordered by turreted houses with stone staircases, sometimes by more humble dwellings which attest to the former wine-growing activity that was so much a part of the area’s activity in the past..

As visitors walk through the streets they will discover vestiges of the ancient abbey of Saint-Pierre, one of the first abbeys founded in Burgundy and dating from the Carolingian era, and Saint-Genest, the parish church, which is a fine example of Flamboyant Gothic architecture. Two fortified town gates open onto the green Auxois countryside which begins at the base of the wall.

I know of no film that better captures the beauty of a small French village than Chocolat. Filmed in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in Burgundy, Chocolat is the story of a mysterious stranger arriving in a small French village and displeasing the local powers to be.
